EVER SEEN A CROSS-DRESSING DISCO BIKER KUNG-FU SPY MUSICAL? Elizabeth Picture Theatre 9pm Saturday 27th February.
Brisbane’s Trash Video owner-turned-filmmaker Andrew Leavold spent half a lifetime turning the 2’9” James Bond of the Philippines into a documentary and book (THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG), and even HE thought Weng Weng’s Bond spoof For Your Height Only was the high-water mark for bizarre cinema… then he dug a little deeper…
Leavold introduces THE LOST FILMS OF WENG WENG, three of Weng Weng's ultra-rare Tagalog language films he’s edited down to their essentials and subtitled into English, all seen outside the Philippines for the very first time! You get the gold from - STARIRAY (the Philippines’ King of Comedy, Dolphy’s in a 1981 cross-dressing disco actioner, in which a gruff-voiced Weng Weng as Chief of Operations teaches him kung fu); DA BEST IN DA WEST (another Weng Weng western also from 1981, this time as Dolphy's deputy Bronson!); and LEGS… KATAWAN… BABAE! (stars Hagibis, the Filipino Village People, in a delirious disco kung fu spy musical WESTERN [!!!] in which Weng Weng makes a cameo in the final blazing line-dancing number).
Leavold is also selling Weng Weng and Trash Video merch in the foyer while DJ Screaming Meanies spins vintage Filipino funk from 8pm; Leavold’s talk and film program starts at 9pm sharp.
